Uncle Vanya

March 22, 2025

Donald Oat Theater
Norwich, CT

By Anton Chekhov
Adapted by Annie Baker
Directed by Michael Hinton

A renowned academic retires and returns to his country estate. His arrival causes the household to descend into chaos. New and old worldviews collide. Love becomes entangled. Tradition buckles under new scrutiny.

This Studio Series production is part of NEST’s efforts to explore new models of making theatre. Rehearsed once a week over 10 weeks and presented with minimal tech, this intimate workshop production is a deep dive into Chekhov’s classic story of human relationships and yearning. Adapted by Annie Baker with the “goal of creating a version that sounds to our contemporary American ears the way the play sounded to Russian ears during [its] first productions in the provinces in 1898.”
